Hi All!
The U-47 project I am doing is the last version of U-47 before her final
patrol # 10. At that time U-47 had the full spray fin on it's tower. The tower
also had the air tunneling with all the extra rails and ladders. The 2.0 cm
gun was on the aft of the tower. The Diesel Exhaust was oval and not round
at this time. Scott, did you want a late or early version of U-47?
Regards,
Dan B.

Hi Dan,
Can I ask if you are using any aftermarket sets for your model? By the
way, my own model, in 35th scale, will be of U 47 before the last
patrol too. I'm using the VIIB tower from Dream Arts. Dream Arts
obviously used the 35th scale tower from Accurate Armour and modified
it to a 1940 onwards VIIB tower. The kit includes the L-shaped air
trunks thankfully.
I think you'll already know this but do you know about the UZO placemenet in the Revell kit?
Cheers,
Dougie

Hi Dougie!
My parents will be moving here with us in Minnesota so I will be sure to get him to sign a picture for you . They will be here June 18th. So... crazy people to think alike!! Yes I was aware of the mislocation of the UZO in the Revell kit. I was not totally sure, just checking photos and line drawings ! I am using several PE kits of this project. The Edwards kit, the WEM kit, the Modelbrass kit, just to name a few! I am planning to use the Modelbrass deck for the B. I agree it is closer than the wood Natilus deck. The wood is nice but not correct for a B. Can you give me the web address for the Dream Arts Conning Tower? I did a conversion of the Revell tower, but I am not totally happy with it. Hope your B is going well. I still have much work before the two halves are ready to amte yet.
Best Regards,
Dan B.

Hi Dan,
No worries over the photo, please take your time. The Dream Arts website is at -
http://www.dream-arts.info/
I think the website has been revamped recently because the VIIB tower
is not on it. I presume they have forgotten to add the VIIB tower as
the other towers are there. The other towers can be seen if you go to
"shop" then "U-Boot Tuerme." They're actually pretty good these
towers. It is a pain that the VIIB tower isn't there as it might
help you. Maybe it will be added to the site in a few weeks.
One thing about the Dream Arts VIIB tower is that it is a late VIIB
tower. On late VIIB towers (such as U 99 and U 100) and VIIC
towers, the wind deflector at the top of the tower bulwark curves
outward more than on the early VIIBs (such as U 47 and U 48). The
Dream Arts wind deflector therefore needs altering for U 47 if complete
accuracy is desired. I'm debating whether to just leave it as it is
since it would take a lot of effort to modify it accordingly.
My drilling skills aren't that great so I designed a PE brass set so
that I could alter the drainage holes from a VIIC to a VIIB. On
this brass sheet I included breakwaters, which are actually
pretty big in 35th scale. I also added the round drainage holes
for the sides of the tower, which changed over U 47's career. Lastly I
added a Pillkoppen pennant on the sheet. Luckily, as it is 35th scale,
the pennant turned out okay. Now just to build the thing!
Can I ask if you have filled in the double row of elongated holes above
the top torpedo doors (as was the case with VIIBs)? By the way, the
torpedo doors are a full 7mm too long - quite a gaffe by Revell!
Lastly, have you scrachbuilt the L-shaped trunks for your model yet?
Cheers,
Dougie

Hi Dougie!
You are working in 1/35 scale! Is your house big enough!! I used epoxy putty to do the tunneling. And I used epoxy putty and filler for the top Trop vents for the Type B. I did alter the spray deflector for the U-47. It seems that it doesn't come all the way around on U-47 as for U-99 etc.. Can you make a 1/72 scale Pilkoppen for me? I haven't come to that part yet on my project and am wondering how to do it in 1/72 scale? Thanks for web address for the late B Trumen!
Good Luck with the project! Sounds like you have it well in hand!
Best Regards My Friend!

Hi Dan,
Yeah, space is a real problem in 35th
scale. Especially as I have a dockside to go with the model, which is 7 foot
long. This can be seen at –
http://photos.kitmaker.net/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuse r=7546
These photos show the dockside a while
back, before I added a few parts. I don’t have the boat (U 96) in the photos,
just the dockside. I didn’t build the dockside, only added a few figures. Other
than the figures in the photos, I’ve added a curvy office worker, a
not-so-curvy nurse, a guy with a wheelbarrow, a dog, seagulls, a few rats and
two large mines.
I wish I’d known about your project a few
months ago or I’d have added a Pillkoppen pennant in 72nd onto my
sheet. I’m no expert in producing brass sets (my co-founder of U-Brass sets
helped me with it). But I’d say producing a sheet for just one small part is
likely to be prohibitive financially. You are certainly welcome to the drawing
I did of the Pillkoppen pennant, though. I can help you with decals. I
have an extra set of waterline indicator markings (the line of white numerals,
of which there were 6 on VIIs) for Revell’s 72nd kit. Would you like
a set?
Looking forward to the announcement, Scott.
Cheers guys,
Dougie

Hi Dougie!
Yes, I could use a set for my U-47. Also if you can send me the drawing of the Pillkoppen that would be great! I am replacing sanded rivets in 1/72 now. Talk about maddening!!! But I want this hull to be as accurate as possible for Scott.
Best Regards my Friend!

Hi Dan,
Sure, I'll send you a set. Can you email me direct and I'll send you
the Pillkoppen drawing too? Is your hull going to be the basis for
Scott's conversion set? If so there are a number of inaccuracies in the
Revell hull. Many of them are covered in my article on VIIC
free-flooding vent patterns. This can be downloaded as a pdf from my
friend and U-Brass co-founder Wink Grise's site at -
http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/u557/ubrass. shtml
One big gaffe by Revell is the torpedo door length, which are a full
7mm too long. Also the anchor recess needs brought forward 7mm
too. The two bumps aren't in the right place either. Wink and I
produced a PE set called U-Brass to fix most of the inaccuracies in the
Revell hull. This set helps to build a VIIB too. It is now on sale from
White Ensign in the UK.
On the progress link on this website there is some really interesting
info on Wink's model. It will be some model when he is finished!
Cheers,
Dougie
The guide to the placement of the decals I'll be sending is on the link above too.

Hi DOugie!
Yes if I can get this hull done ASAP Scott would like to use it. I used the conversion set for the Trop. doors and anchor area. I am also replacing the "bumps" I am replacing the lower hull vents with the Modelbrass set. Only one I have found to replace the vents on the Revell kit. I hope to get this hull done by Monday some time.
Your 1/32 Project is looking good! How did you find a 1/32 hull?
Best Regards My Friend!
