Hi!

Yes, this is the kit I used to convert the Revell VIIC/41 kit. I used the later hull and tower for the Type VIID/42 U-218. I had to use the early Type VIIC deck for the bow/front section of the deck. This was mated to the later deck for the snorkel.  When I finish this project and get some pics of this monster, you will see the results.

Regards,

  Oh sorry Dan

I thought you were scrathbuilding your VIID. I've seen example of armor modelers scratch building a rare type of one sort or other only to finish it, and then two months later it comes out in kit form.

Hi!

THat is OK! I had it in my future planes to do a Type VIID and some day to do a Type VII F. I beleive the Type D and F are about the same length. The deck arrangements are different because of the different roles they were made for. THe Type F was a Trop. Resupply Boot. I need to do more research on this Type. I am thinking I could use the Special Navy extensions with some major reworking to do a Type VII F project some day.  As I said, I will need to do more research on the F first.

Still working on getting the deck details on my Type D now. More to come.....

Regards,

I am also working on the new Panzer IV Brukenleger b. It is really a sweet kit...

Not for a beginner.

Hello Alles Kameraden!

I now have the deck and tower completed. I have also air brushed the three basic colours for this Boot. I have also completed the dunkelgrau 52 camo patteren on the upper hull. All of this required a massive amount of masking tape! Now on to the detail painting and weathering! I am thinking of mounting this monster on a flat piece of oak with wood slats as a U-Boot would be in dry dock. More to come......

Regards,

I like your mounting idea, Bauer. Looking forward to seeing a picture of the dunkelgrau 52 camouflage pattern!

 Thanks,

I have not worked on the U-218 for a few days. Needed a break. I will pick up on it again on Monday. I will start with the general delailing now and the gerneral weathering.

Regards,

Hello all!

Latest progress on my Type VIID/42 U-218 progress.

I now have the basic model complete. I still have some detail and weathering to do. I am presently working on the cables.  I have to scratch build  the insulators for the cables. I had to scratch build the deck railings for this project as the kit ones were not correct for a type VII D.  I have the Boot mountrd on its base now. The base is showing the boat in dry dock.  More to come......

Hi Dan,

Well done, Dan. Always a good feeling when a model is finished. Especially ones which are more than out-of-box builds.  U 218 is a good choice, if I may say so. The colour scheme and unusual aspect of wintergarten on top of the mine shafts make a very interesting subject.

I wonder what your next subject will be.  An original VII (sometimes referred to as a VIIA) would be quite special, but would take a very great deal of time and effort to convert. A VIIF would take a lot too but would be pretty unique. Not many F models around!

Ever thought about moving to 35th scale, even for a tower only? The Dream Arts towers are very good.

Looking forward to seeing the model.

Cheers,

Dougie
