Hi Again Dougie!

1/32 has interested me, but I would like to stay with 1/72 for the present.  A Type VII F would be interesting.  How much longer would an F be compared to the D in 1/72 scale?  I beleive not too much?!? What about the deck arangement ? Many more compartments for the trops? . Any drawings available of the Type VII F deck?

Regards,

Hi Dan,

Only a little longer. A F was 77.6 metres, a D 76.9.  But the Fs were unique in the area above the saddle tanks. On VIICs there was a group of slots forward of the saddle tanks and another group behind. The Fs also had these holes but also had extra holes which ran between the front and rear groups. This effectively gave one very long line of slots which ran along most of the hull casing. If you have Stern's Type VII U-Boats, you can see this on a VIIF on page 25.

As for the VIIF deck, it was significantly wider  than a VIIC deck around the tower area.  You'd have to design a new deck for this.

Thinking about it now, modifying a VIIC to a VIIF really would be a challenge. First finding suitable plans and photos, and secondly the extensive modelling required.  Not impossible but a hell of a project.

How about an early VIIB? Converting the Revell tower to an early VIIB (without the 20mm) would be a much easier task.  Especially as there is lots of info and photos on these early towers.

Cheers,

Dougie

 Hi Dougie!

Good info on the Type VII F. Yes, it would be a major project.  Much more than a late D I just finished. My U-218 took me over 6 months to complete!  An early type VII B has some interest too.  A Type VII A would be different too. How much shorter was the A to the B ?

Regards,

Hi Dan,

An A was a little shorter but there were significant differences in the hull to a B and C. There was only one rudder and the saddle tanks were smaller. To change to an A from a C model would be even more of a task than a VIIF. It would maybe have to be scratchbuilt. Hence the lack of VIIA models out there!

Hopefully Revell will make a 72nd IX. There is certainly a demand for one.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi Dougie!

Wow! So I guess a Type VII A is a no-go! Yes, I have been thinking along the same lines of a 1/72 Type IX! Now that they have done the Gato class, I would think a Type IX would not be too far off. I have gone on the Revell of Germany site and suggested a Type IX more than once.  If more would do that, maybe they would at least think about it.

Regards,
