Hello All!
I am starting my new project! A 1/72 diorama of a TYPE VIIC Boot under
attack from a British PBY-2.

Still in planning stages. Trying to tie down details on U-452. The U-Boot
subject for this diorama.

More to come.....

For the PBY's props are you going to go with clear plastic discs, or just cut the props off the spinner and go with that?

I like your idea of a wire thru a water spout. I once saw a diorama of a Japaneese torpedo bomber on the attack. The builder put the tip of the torpedo into the water and then secured the plane to the tail fin of the torpedo. It looked good, of course the torpedo plane has a much lower and flatter angle of attack as compared to a PBY dropping a bomb.

What are you thinking for the water spout? Dowel? Acrylic rod? One of the two with some gel on it?

Do you subscribe to Finescale Modeler? If not I do and they have a pretty good forum, I would be happy to ask the guys for any ideas you may have questions on.

Good luck Dan, and keep us posted.

Hi Panther!

Great idea with the prpos! I will go with the clear dics.  I also am leaning toward the Acrylic rod. I will use that to secure the plane to the base and the U-Boat.  I will not model the depthcharges as they will have been already dropped.  I will have to scratch build the carriers on the Catalina for them however.

No, I do not get Finescale Modeler. I am a member of the IPMS however. Yes, any help or ideas would be welcomed.

Thanks Again Panther!

Hello All!
Progress report U:452 project:

I have the really nasty dusty dirty job of drilling out all
the vents and dranage slots cut out of the hull sides
now. I also have cut out and moved the anchor area
and replaced the too long trop. doors with the correct
PE. Thanks again to my Friend Dougie for the design
to correct this major flaw with the Revell kit.
Next I need to scratch build a partial pressure hull
to fill the void in the hull. I need only to build a partial
top of the pressure hull as the hull is cut at a slant
along the waterline. I also have British PBY-2 to build
for this project.

More to come.....

PS. Any ideas , comments, questions are
welcomed.

Best Regards.

Hello All!

Progress Report on U-452 Project :

I have been working on the Tower for the U-452. Many thanks to Dougie for sending the only pic found so far of U-452.  This pic is very grainy, but you can pic out some useful details needed to build this Boot.  This Boot had the extra housing for the antenna on the port side of the tower. Also noted is the lack of a Net Cutter and the addition of the top spray deflector. I could not tell if this Boot still had the 8.8cm Kannon or not.  Any  thoughts on this Dougie or anyone else?

I have started  on the PBY-2 now.  This is a very nice 1/72 kit. It does lack major detail in the cockpit area. I ordered the 1/72 kit from WEM and also the needed paint for both kits.  I really like the  WEM paint. I have found that when using this paint in your air brush,( I have an old Pasashe VT) that you must use  a superior lacquer thinner and mix the paint 50/50. I have learned this by trial and error with the WEM Colourcoats paint. So be warned.

More to come.....

Although you probably already know this, looking through my reference book on the WWII U-Boat Fleet turned up the following notes you might find useful, mostly for the PBY-2.

The Catalina that sunk U-452 was from 209 Squadron RAF. ASW Trawler HMS Vascama also participated in her destruction. All hands lost.

Hello Pavel1

Thank you for the info. It will be useful for detailing the PBY-2.

Regards,

Hello All!

Progress Report on U-452 project:

Still working on the details of the Tower. I am using a PE set from Edward.  Very nice set. Lots of little bits and pieces to work with. Will be working on upper hull of Boot when fifnished with Tower. Will be going to Hobby/Craft store today to look for syrofoam to construct water spouts from explosions of the depth charges.

More to come....

Sounds like you're on to something Dan, can you elaborate a little on your water spout idea?

Hello!

As they say" If I told you, I'd have to kill you!" No, just kidding..... I am going to try an idea to make water spouts by another modeler,  using styrofoam.  Forming the water using the styrofoam carving it to shape. Then painting it white with some blue highlights. I will see how it turns out. I may go back to the Woodlands water method.

More to come....
