I haven't played any of the single mission games yet, having to much fun with my career. Will get there some day though.

I know what you mean - I (sad old sod that I am) find the atmosphere of leaving port on the boat quite exhilirating. Have yet to have the time to start the career!!

Ah there's nothing more frustrating then chasing tankers and Victory ships through an Atlantic storm for four (game) days. Only to see most miss and the three that did hit were duds. The victory ship got in a shot however on my compressor that forced me to lay back while the crew got that squared away.
The weather is now clear without a ship in sight and nothing on the hydro-phones. Good luck to you Schwert when you do decide to venture forth on a career.

Finally sank my first Flower Corvette. She had been bothering (pinging & depthcharging) me intermittently for about an hour when I finally said "enough's enough" & decided to take a chance on her. 1 torpedo placed directly underneath her & that was "all she wrote". Guess they weren't expecting that! I normally don't mess with escorts & will run from them at first sight, before I'm spotted. It may be a bit cowardly but being sunk in the middle of a successful patrol/carreer isn't too much fun...

I don't mess with them either, haven't yet anyway, not cowardly either, correct U-boat tactics I believe. I also run submerged during the day in fair weather, I avoid planes at all costs also.

Does anyone know of some good hunting grounds for U-68 (type IX C). I'm into April-May '41 & BDU keeps sending me to patrol the area just north of Freetown quite a bit. Takes a while to get down there & expends quite a bit of diesel fuel (even running at slow or 1/3). My last patrol there was a total bust...really crappy (heavy rain & fog) weather for 90% of the trip; almost pointless trying to find targets.!!!!
Thanking you in advance.

I just got done sinking a coastal merchant and my game crashed!! Thats never happened before and I hope it doesn't become a trend!
Gasbag
I've only had Type VIIC and VIIC\41, they only send me to the west of Ireland. And I'm not to happy with the hunting in this area either.
Hagen U763
Of course with the game crash I may not have 763 anymore, the Allies couldn't sink me but my computer apparently can.

That's a realoff about your game crashing. So far I've been fortunate & had only a couple of crashes. These have only occurred after I fooled around with a file that I shouldn't have & I've always been able to undo my mistake. Otherwise my game is stable.
I've got 3 careers going at present (am using SH3 Commander): U-49 (VII B), U-69 (VII C) & U-124 (IX B). At first I hesitated about using the Type IX boats but now I'm finding that I actually prefer them to the VII series.
One final note; I regret to inform you that U-68 (Hans Borchert, RK) was lost with all hands near the Canary Islands on May, 15th, 1941. A brave commander and crew on now on eternal patrol.

Kreigstagbuch U-168
Jan 2 1943
Left Lorient 0935 January 1st 1943.
Patrol Area GR83, SW of Capetown South Africa
Will try running on surface at 1/3 power to conserve fuel, will also run submerged as long as possible.
At 0012 hrs was attacked by what appeared to be a Catalina flying boat, four passes with depth charges, no damage.

OK I am comitted now. I am just setting out (at night) on my first patrol of my career in a VIIb of the 7th Flotilla. A bit of a pain having to sail around the Skaggerak and Kattegut but am enjoying the sea breeze and the excitement of a new trip ... how long will that excitement last? Watch this space.
