Hi Everyone - First time poster.

A colleague of mine has come into posession of a 1930's art deco decanter and 6 shot glasses with the U47 name and an inscription in german that is was "presented to Gunther Prien by the Furher for the sinking of the Royal Oak on 14th October 1939".

Your website has been exeptional in finding our more about the man, but we were hoping to find out more about the authenticity of the decanter. We are presuming that it might have been presented on the 18th October when he was awarded the Knights cross. Any info or even pictures would be extremely useful.

Hi Mibmobile, and welcome to the boards. I got an email just before Christmas about this - was it you? I meant to reply but the holiday period pretty much caught up with me! I'll have a look again at the images you set, but from what I recall they did look interesting.

With regard to U47/Prien memorabilia, many pieces were made on an unofficial basis after the Scapa Raid; many wellwishers used their art and craft skills to create such gifts. You can find many things floating around, from candleholders and tankards to plates and ceremonial daggers.

If you have some detail as to the provenance of these items, I would be more than interested in finding out more about them!

Hi

Is it possable that this could of also been a ships decanter from the captains cabin or ward room? A lot of ships did have decanters and shot glasses for special dignatories who came aboard, This is of course just a idea or guess as I am sure like said before me that many irems must of been produced in there thousands in commeration of events .

Gentlemen,

Being one of the most famous U-boat commanders of WWII,I'm not surprised that Prien should get gifts and unoffical awards from plenty of people who knew a hero when they see or hear of one.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Kaleun it may be the same item as my colleague purchased it just after Chirstmas so the previous owner may have been investigating as well. I am getting some photo sorted out and will post them on the forum soon.

If they don't come out I can email them to someone.
