In the beginning of the war all U-boat men were volunteers, did this hold true later in the war as the attrition rate among U-boat crews rose? Did they have to take men from other branchs; ie Luftwaffe mechanics with no planes, or sailors without ships?

Hi !

I have never heard of this. I was always told all U-Boat Men were Freiwillen.

I could be wrong however. My father was drafted into the Kriegsmarine, but he volunteered for U-Boat Service. That was in 1940.

I'm pretty sure you could be drafted into basic service branches (Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine) but often were encouraged to volunteer for various units (Grossdeutschland, Fallschirmjaeger, Gebirgsjaeger, U-Boot, etc.)

Yes, I would think with the specialized training involved in being on a U-Boot most would be FreiWillen.
