Hello All!

Well, I have finally taken some time to work on my U-47 . I finished the pressure hull. And I also now have the deck on the Boat.  Tonight I started working on the hull details. I placed the tropedo doors on. I have all the bow detal to do including the net cutter on the bow and the deck as well. So far, so good as they say.  The project is coming along better than I thought. I will attempt some pictures when it is near completion.

Regards,

Sounds like your boat is coming along nicely Dan. I have a question for you. When was the net cutter deleted from the boats? Thanks Dan

Hi Panther!

That is hard to say. Most U-Boats had them removed by Mid-Late 1942. But I do beleive some still carried them much later and maybe even some thru their entire career. I know U-47 had her's till the end.....

Regards,

Oh, I forgot...

I am now working on the deck details, including the 8.8cm Deck Gun. By the way, the net cutter consisted of 8 parts! How's that for detail! I know, I am a "screwball" for detail!!?!! But it will look better than the kit one!  I should be ready to shoot the base colours of Schiffsbordenfarbe III Grau I, and Schickgrau 58 in a day or so....

Regards,

Hello Again!

Well, I am almost ready for the paint! I have just a few more details on the deck to finish up. The 8.8cm deck kannon in done and in place. I have to scratch build a set of rails for the deck aft of the tower. They were different than the common Type C rails in the kit.  Should be little trouble as I can use part of the exsisting rails but need to add to them. Look at pics and line drawings of Late U-47 to see what I am talking about.  I am so thankful for this site! It has been a big help in researching and building this project!

Regards,

Hi Dan,

Great stuff. You sound well through the project. It is always great when a model is finished, especially when it is a detailed build rather than a regular out-of-the-box box. Yours sounds like the former, certainly!

You are right about the rails being different to the VIICs. On the subject of railings, I see that during the July/August 1940 refit the additional three bars, in a triangular shape, were added, plus 2 wires per side too. That was quite understandable. But at the same time they removed the wooden seat from the rear deck railing, leaving only the bare posts below.  I thought they would have left the wooden seat on?

Net cutter removal is discussed a lot in U-boat modelling so I looked through all my books a while back to see what time the removal occurred. From the photos in books, they seem to have been removed in the February/March/April 1941 time frame. Prior to this period they were generally present while after this period they were generally absent. There were exceptions though - U 96 probably still had hers in May 41.

The breakwaters (Revell parts 115 and 116) were removed generally in the April/May/June 1941 time period.

So if U 47 had survived to be relegated to a training flotilla in mid-41 or so,  it is a good bet her net cutter and breakwaters would have been removed by then.

Looking forward to seeing your model in due course, and please keep us informed of progress.

Best of luck,

Dougie

Hi Dougie !

Thanks for the positive words!  I used the wood Natulis deck for the Early Type C deck. I know it is not quite the same as the Type B deck, but I though the Early C would be close to the Late B version I am working on. I am now finished with air brushing the basic colours on the boat.  I now must work on some detail painting par your excellent work on painting U-Boats. I plan to use a very lite hand on any weathering as I am showing U-47 just as it is going out on it's 10th and last partol.  One Question: how long was U-47 delayed before going out and for what reason was the patrol delayed? This will help in my weathering of the boat.

Thanks again.

Hi Dan,

There were test runs on the 15th and 18th February, both of which revealed faults. This delayed departure but only for a few days. The paint on the boat on the 20th was pretty fresh (maybe only a week or a bit more old?) so you are right in using the very minimum weathering. Certainly in the photos on that day the paint looks fresh and there is no rust.

I haven't heard what the faults found on the test run were. Wish I knew! But on departing on the last patrol, Prien was not happy at the technical condition of U 47, and remarked as such to Kretschmer. Of all the possible theories for U 47's loss, I'd say the possibility of a mechanical or structural failure (perhaps linked to recent depth charging) would remain high among them.  But that is getting into another whole debate!

Cheers,

Dougie

Thanks Dougie1

I will remember that as I begin to detail and weather the Boot.  So U-47 will look pretty fresh. I will do some minor scuffing on the deck/ metal hatch areas, but that will be very minor.

As you had mentioned that the condition of U-47 was not up to par only fuels the theories of how she was lost. If there was structural weakness or possible sealing problems, it is a wonder why the Boot was even allowed out untill the repairs were done correctly. But we will never know.  I would like to see the dock repair orders when U-47 returned from her 9th Patrol. They may give some clue as to what the problems were. But I would assume those records have been lost to time...

Thanks Again for the help!

Best Regards,

WinkHi All!

Just placed the Snorting Bull decals on my Late U-47 project. Had to really look to find the Bulls that were close to the late emblems.  I will now get the rigging on the Boot tomarrow and the Kreigsmarine Ensign placed. The final weathering will be started this weekend.  Should be ready for pictures by next week.

Regards,
