   The TypeII U-boats known as 'Einbaum' or 'dugout canoe' were small coastal boats that operated early in the war. They operated well in shallower waters due to their small size and ability to dive quickly, they were however cramped and could carry only a very limited amount of torpedos. They were used later on as training boats. Does anyone know;

    The top scoring TypeII?

    Top Scoring commander of a TypeII?

     Any of Germany's top aces that started out in the TypeII?

     Longest mission of a TypeII?

     Were they capable of working around the British Isles?

Hi Panther!

I don't know all that much about the Type II.  They were most ly for costal partols but some did patrol around the British Isles.  U.boat.net should have more info than I can provide. They would make an interesting subject to model. I am waiting for Revell of Germany to come out with a new 1/72 U-boat subject.  I would like to see a 1/72 Type II or Type IX.

Regards,

I believe the Type II was capable of operating around the British Isles, but I suspect due to transit time (by the time the French coast ports nearer the English Channel opened up to the Kriegsmarine, the Type II was being relegated to training status if I recall correctly) from the "secure" ports, they didn't have much in the way of combat patrol range by the time they got out into the operational area. Probably scored some tonnage on the Eastern coastline of Britain though.
