Hello All !

I am trying to research a new project. I want to do a diorama of a Type VIIC U-boat under attack from an Allied Flying Boat, maybe an early Catalina. British, of course.  Does anyone have a photo of a U-Boat under attack like this?  It does not have to be a VIIC. I need this to get some ideas of how to do this. I will be using the 1/72 Revell Type VII C Boot.

As usual , any help is nice !

Best Regards,

  Hi Dan

I've tried a couple of times to upload a pic for you but don't seem to be able to. Just out of curiosity how are you going to pull this off?? I mean mainly the "plane in flight", pretty tricky isn't it? As for the boat you going to waterline it and put it in a celluclay sea with a gel medium for the actual water?

Hello Panther!

Yes, I do have some things to iron out for this project.  I will use a gel medium as the ocean. I have found this to be the easiest way to do that.  As far as the support I am leaning toward a wire going up thru the spout of water from a depth charge explosion beside the hull of the U-boat.  I am still researching the means to do the water spouts, I plan to do two. one on each side of the Boot. I am thinking I will use the Woodland Scenes  method of making fast moving water. They have a system that model railroaders use to make waterfalls etc...

The boat I will depict will be U-452. A type VIIC which was attacked and sunk by a British Catalina in 1941. So it should be interesting.....

I will start a new fourm of this project on the Modeling site of this Fourm.

Any ideas let me know. I am still thinking about placing a few U-boat crewman on the deck of the u-boat. as well.

Regards,

Hi Dan,

A few modellers have made waterline VIICs from the Revell kit with really good results. There was one model of U 96 ploughing through the water which was truly outstanding.

I've heard that Woodland Scenics are really good for producing water. I take it you'll be chopping off the lower hull?

There isn't an emblem for U 452 in Hoegel's Emblem book, nor in his update booklet. Photos of the boat may well be very rare, or it could be it didn't have an emblem.

I made a Catalina in my youth. I remember it was a largish size in 72nd scale.  Nice looking aircraft, just like the Sunderland.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi Dougie!

Thanks for the help in the research! I will model U-452 as a waterline, also for artisic impact I plant to have the U-Boat at an angle as if just surfacing from a depth-charge attack.  The British Catalina will be over front section above . I plan to have two explosions/ water spouts, one on each side of the Boot.  I am also thinking of having some crew on the bridge with life apparatus on. The Germans did not call them "life preservers" or "Mae Wests" as the Allies.

So if I can't get any more info on the paint scheme of  U-452, I plan to paint the Boot a standard Dunkelgrau 51 upper hull/tower, Schiffgrau III lower hull.  I need to do more research on the date when U-452 was sunk to try to determine an educated quess as to if the Boot had its net cutter or not.

Thanks again my Friend,

Hello ALL!

I have just researched the career of my subject U-452 for my attack dio.

U-452 was only on one active patrol. It started out from Trondheim on the 19th of August 1941. The U-Boot was sunk 6 days later on 25th August 1941.  The Boot was assigned to the 3rd U-Flottile, Kiel.  So with that late a date, I am thinking  U-452 was not likely to have a net-cutter.  Can anyone give me an educated guess on this series of boats as to the Tower arrangment?  (Built  mid- 41 Kiel)

Again thanks for any help.

Hi Dan,

I have found a photo of U 452 on the 24th March 1941, which I'll scan and send to you. The boat is 5 days from being launched, and is far off so not much can be seen. I can't really determine any colours from it, though it isn't in S58. It is either H50 or the more common D51. As D51 was the arguably the most common upper colour, I'd agree with you to go with that.

U 452 was sunk at the end of August 41.  The process of removing the net cutter occurred around the March/April/May 1941 period soyou are right that a net cutter would be unlikely in Aug 41.  Plus I can't see a net cutter in that March photo.

The breakwaters were generally removed around the April/May/June 1941 period so it would probably be best not to fit them.

The wind deflector flange around the top of the tower was something that was fitted to U-boats throughout the course of 1941. But I'm pretty sure I can see a wind deflector on the boat in the late March photo.

You'll need the mast antenna housing part at the port side of the tower (like U 201).

U 458 had a shorter main drainage slot than usual so maybe U 452 had that too. I'll send a photo.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hello Dougie!

That is great that you have found a photo!
I remember from your great research paper on U-Boat colours that the
scheme of a U-Boat is difficult at best when you have a faint B/W photo to
go by. I under about your love of the Suderland. I agree it is a wonderful
aircraft! I am using an early Catalina because I found a good buy on E-
bay!
Also, of course I had read the accounts of the PBY-2 that dicovered
Bismarck . Of course I am doing the Catalina in British colours and
markings. I plan to use WEM coulors for both the Boot and the PBY-2.

Again, thanks for the help!
PS...
I keep forgeting your pic of U-805.
I am sorry, I will send it to you ASAP.
Looking foward to the pic. of U-452.
Best Regards,

Doesn't show the plane but does show the deck watch wishing they had seen the approaching plane a few minutes earlier.

This is a type IX boat is it not? What type of tower is this?

Hi Panther,

Yeah, it is an IX. A good shot of the long range IXD2 U 848. The tower is like the Turm IV that was fitted to VIIs from 1943 onwards, with the second lower platform known as the wintergarten.

Cheers,

Dougie.
