Hello all
Just purchased the Revell kit# 05038 TypeVIIC model in 1/144 scale. To me it looks like a scaled down version of their 1/72 U-Boat so don't want it to be confused with the U99 kit. Here's my question I want to decal it as the U96 the instructions only show it in it's early war configuration, will this kit allow me to build it as a later version? And if so how? As I stated above it's a scaled down version of Revells 1/72 boat, so could I just delete the net cutter and be OK? Or should I/could I build it with the second conning tower configuration? Delete the deck gun? Or is it the early version or nothing? Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Panther,
It all depends when you want to model U 96. The boat had different features at different times. I'm not sure if or when a second platform was added to the boat. I'd recommend keeping to an early war U 96.
If you want to have the sawfish insignia you should be careful which features to add. The sawfish was there on the 4th patrol, which took place in April/May 1941. During the 4th patrol U 96 did have a netcutter, did not have the breakwaters and did have a wind deflector. At least with this combination of features and insignia you can be assured of historical accuracy.
For details of the sawfish/snorting bull on U 96 see my pdf article on the snorting bull at -
http://amp.rokket.biz/reference.shtml
This U 96 section is slightly updated to the section on this site.
A paint colour article can be downloaded too. For upper colours of U 96 I'd say Hellgrau 50 was definitely too light. Dunkelgrau 51 would be closer.
Nice little kit you have, and U 96 makes a good choice of boat.
Cheers,
Dougie
PS What colour is the sawfish in the decal sheet?

Hi Dougie
Thanks for answering so quickly. Looking forward to seeing your article. The sawfish is a blue color. I have another question maybe you can answer, how do you do the national flags? This one is a decal but would also like to know the best way to do the paper ones also. Also is dbauer still around??

Was just re-reading your post and I think we may be talking about two different types of conning towers. This kit doesn't come with a two platform sail, it just has a variation on the original tower in the form of a housing on the left side of the tower for an aerial. This housing forms a bulge on the left side of the tower and runs from the deck all the way up the tower.
Again, thanks for any help!

Hi Panther,
Ah, I see now. This housing was the housing for the hydraulically extendable mast antenna. U 96 wasn't built with this feature, nor was it added later.
Well, I am a little biased, but I would recommend the AMP flags for the Kriegsmarine flag. There is one in 144th scale for your kit -
http://amp.rokket.biz/flags.shtml
The flags and waterline decals are discussed in the forum posts -

Thanks again Dougie! I take it my blue sawfish passes muster?

Hi Panther,
Sure, it passes muster. I ask because I don't have the 144th kit and wondered what colour Revell had opted for. The U 96 sawfish colour has been endlessly debated. Nobody knows the true colour, as far as I can tell. Green and blue are the two most common colours put forward, and black too because of Das Boot. I suspect we'll never know for sure.
Best of luck with the kit.
Cheers,
Dougie

I always thought the sawfish green for some reason. As for wishing me luck, Thanks. I've got the hull together and the deck in place, a very nice fit, will only need a touch of filler in three spots. The kit has a couple of bulkheads that will hopefully help against any twisting or bending while sanding. It appears there's slots for more bulkheads, perhaps an interior kit is on the way? If not a good starting point for an aftermarket company.

Hi All!
Sorry for the long leave of absence. I believe the green was the correct colour. I know ULAD has a set in 1/72 but they are blue, which i beleive is not correct for U-96.
Best Regards,
Dan
