I just got the game a couple of days ago, still working my way thru the tutorials. Like the looks of it so far, a little more complex then SH2.

Finally started playing, I really am enjoying this game. Although right now, my type VII and crew are just west of Ireland being worked over by a British destroyer.

Hm, first message in a long time on this topic.
Most recent patrol (Departed Lorient on October 4th, 1940) involved sinking five vessels, evading an RCN Corvette and a RAF Hurricane fighter-bomber patrol, and returning to base. Vessels sunk: - 1 Small Merchant - 1 T2 Tanker - 3 C3 Cargo Vessels Massive renown, awards, etc, all from that one patrol. Then, because I'm still getting used to SH3, I f**ked up on the save-game screen and now am going to have to re-attempt a similar patrol, which will hopefully be as fruitful.

Bought the game in January & am finding myself getting addicted to it. Best results were 13 ships (Happy Time scn) totalling 95,675 GRT. Had a litlle accident when I returned to base (rammed the dock & suffered slight damage). Easy game to lose yourself in...

Hey, welcome to the forum, Gasbag. And yes, it is one Hell of an easy game to lose yourself in - I tell myself I'll save "halfway through this patrol, then I've gotta get things done," and next thing I know it's six hours later (literally.) and I'm docking with ten merchantmen rusting on the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Was just awarded the Knight's Cross with Gold Oakleaves, Swords, and Diamonds on my seventh patrol. Total tonnage: 140.750. Date: May 15 of 1941. Boat: Type VIIB
Have I been lucky patrolling the North Atlantic so far? Oh yes, yes I have.

July '41:
I'm on my 9th "feindfahrt" (patrol). 189,450 GRT. I've now been awarded every medal up to & including the Golden Oakleaves, Swords & Diamonds. "Traded up" to a VII C with engine enhancements after the 6th patrol. I still have all my original crew, no one has been injured or died yet. I wish BDU wouldn't send me to patrol around Iceland or Greenland; the weather up there is & it goes on for days!! Last patrol I nearly blundered right in to an armed C2 cargo ship because of rough seas, heavy fog & driving rain.

Ah, at least it was a Merchantman! I blundered right into a trio of V&W Destroyers because of bad weather, on the surface. I just jammed the boat up to Flank speed and ran right between them, crash-diving so I'd be in their wake and they couldn't pick me up with ASDIC, then firing the rear tube at one of them, then going down to 100 meters and executing a quick turn to starboard and running quiet with a "Kobold" decoy left at 75 metres.
Then I heard one of the V&Ws blow up from the torp and the sound of two more colliding. Bad weather works both ways. And the weather up there (Around Iceland and the like) is either beautifully calm and smooth, or absolutely hellish. There is no inbetween, apparently.

I just passed the 250,000 ton mark. I'm on my 14th patrol now & have sank 3 ships (2 coastal merchants & 1 small merchant) using my deck gun. So (if I come home in 1 piece) I'll have just over 260,000, that is if I don't sink anything else this time out. My 13th patrol was a total bust: awful weather the whole trip & not a target to be had.
Has anyone kept the same crew throughout their campaign? Just wondering...
