The torpedo thread raised a question, at least for me: What is the legal status of a wreck? Say if the U-47 was found and was divable, would it be allowed. It probably is in international waters, so could the German government claim it as a war grave and disallow people to dive on it?

I would think it would still be German property, so I would have to say yes the German government could claim it as a war grave and forbid diving on the wreck.
But what do I know.

 Hello Again,
I believe that is correct. Even if U-47 is in International Waters, because it is a war grave, the German Government has all rights to it's protection. As I said before, this includes ships like Bismarck and other U-Boats . This also is part of the problem up in Norway. That U-Boat is a war grave, even if is leaking toxic waste or not.

I still wonder. When Ballard found the Titanic, he fialed to claim it and later a commercial salvage company "ref-found" it and claimed the wreck, leaving Ballard in the cold. Ballard wanted to safe the wreck from disturbance...
More recently when the Estonia sank, the neigbouring governments agreed to leave the wreck alone and to not allow any salvage operations to go to the wreck thourgh their waters.
Both incidents make me believe that any wreck "out there" may be free game... I certainly don't hope so, and fortunately you don't just go there...

Hi!
Remember the Titanic is not a war grave.I believethis falls into a different
sort of rules. I am sure with a war grave, the government owns rights to the
wreck in international waters.

Yes,
U-864 a U-Boat sunk near the southern coast of Norway is beginning to leak
a cargo of 70tons of Mercury! The Norwegian Government is determing
what to do with the problem. They has said they bury the wreck with sand
and concrete. Because it is a war grave, they can't bring it up.

I just read up on U-864 at www.uboat.net what a mess, it sounds like entombing the wreck on the ocean floor would be the best move IMO.
U-864 also has a unique distinction, apparently it the only known case in all of naval warfare where one submarine sinks another while both are submerged. It was sunk by HMS Venturer. U-864 was on a mission to Japan with advanced weaponry including jet engines.
The Chief Engineer must of almost fainted when he heard he would have to figure out trimming the boat with 70 tons of mercury.
