Situated in the heart of London, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, is one of the most prestigious
opera houses in the world. It is home to the Royal Academy of Music and Dance and is renowned for its
outstanding opera and ballet productions. In 2021, the theatre celebrates its bicentenary, and to mark
the occasion, the Royal Academy of Music is launching an award dedicated to the theatre’s contribution
to world music culture.
The history of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, spans over two centuries. The theatre was founded
in 1732 and has since become one of the most significant centres of operatic art. The theatre has
earned its fame thanks to the highest level of performance, the quality of its productions and the

The Royal Academy of Music and Dance, the artistic partner of the theatre, has decided to celebrate
Covent Garden’s contribution to the musical arts by establishing an award to recognise outstanding
artists and musicians who have made a significant contribution to the theatre’s history. The award
will recognise and reward the talented and dedicated artists who have helped to make the Royal Opera
House, Covent Garden, the world centre of opera.
To mark the bicentenary of the Royal Academy of Music and Drama, Covent Garden, the award will be a
symbol of their long and successful history, and an acknowledgement of the theatre’s contribution to
the world’s cultural heritage. The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, remains one of the most
prestigious and important musical institutions in the world, continuing to inspire and delight
audiences with its magnificent productions and outstanding performances.
As part of our Bicentenary celebrations, the Academy presents the grand final of this prestigious
competition, launched in 2020 and judged by a panel of eminent musicians, with prizes amounting to
