Saturdays game had a strange start to it with Chris
Thorburn dropping the gloves with Zdeno Chara after Chara
got a penalty for a high hit on Blake Wheeler. Two
seconds after that, James Wright fought Matt Fraser. All
of that occurred before the game was even four minutes
old. The Jets opened the scoring at the 10:54 mark of the
first period with Dustin Byfuglien scoring his 9th of the
season, unassisted. Byfuglien has scored in back-to-back
games and has now surpassed his goal total of last year
with three goals and seven assists in his last 11 games.
But he would be the only Jet to beat Tuukka Rask in the
afternoon game in Boston. Daniel Paille tied the game at
14:06 and the first period ended 1-1 with the Bruins
outshooting the Jets 10-9. The second period was the Jets
best offensively, but despite outshooting the Bruins 19-
12, the team came out trailing 3-1. With the game still
tied at one, the Jets had a number of chances to take the
lead, the best when Devin Setoguchi had Rask down and put
one off the cross bar. Only 53 seconds later, the Bruins
took the lead Torey Krug scored his first of two goals
and, after an assist on the goal in the first, had his
first career three-point game. The rookie defenceman was
a plus-three in the game with four shots on goal. The
only goal of the third came from Riley Smith with his
team leading 15th of the year. The Jets outshot the
Bruins 37-29 with Byfuglien leading the way with seven
shots, followed by Evander Kane with six. After 19 shots
by defencemen in Ottawa, Jets had another 19 in this
game. Jacob Trouba had tough night, finishing minus-three
in only 18:44 of ice time, his second lowest total of the
season other than the game against St. Louis where he was
injured. Andrew Ladd has now gone back-to-back games
without a shot on goal, while Bryan Littles current run
of only two goals in his last 21 games (hes pointless in
his last four) has Byfuglien just one point behind him
for the team scoring lead. Blake Wheeler has now been
kept off the score sheet for three straight games. “I
didnt think we played hard enough,” commented Jets coach
Claude Noel post-game." We had a few good scoring chances
in the second, but needed more people in front of the
net. Our guy (Ondrej Pavelec) didnt see much on the ones
that went in. You cant give up four goals in this league
and expect to win. We have to defend better, we have to
check better. Give up three or four and you are chasing
the game.” The Jets close out their three-game road trip
in Pittsburgh against the Penguins on Sunday afternoon
before returning home to face the Tampa Bay Lightning on
Tuesday evening. Both games are available on TSN Jets
regional and TSN Radio 1290 Winnipeg.

Jersey . - Playing a road game against a division
rival raises the intensity for linebacker Clay
Matthews.Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainments efforts to
find a replacement for chief executive Tim Leiweke have
stalled in recent weeks, with some board members musing
that the company should try to convince Leiweke to stay
on board. The board has spent months interviewing
possible replacements for Leiweke and has been
collectively surprised that some qualified candidates
havent been interested in even interviewing for the job.
MLSE is jointly owned by Bell Media, TSNs parent company,
and telecom rival Rogers Communications. The perception
that those companies are often at odds has made some
sports executives contacted by MLSE wary. Leiweke said in
August that he plans to leave MLSE by June 2015. He has
since confirmed to Bloomberg News that he has talked with
Live Nation Entertainment chairman Irving Azoff about
starting a joint venture that could include assets that
belong to Madison Square Garden Co. Leiweke joined MLSE
in 2013 after working for 13 years for the Anschutz
Entertainment Group, which owns the Los Angeles Lakers
and Kings. After a rough start, when he drew criticism
for a plan to remove photos of Leafs legends from the
hallways of the Air Canada Centre, Leiweke won praise for
his hiring of Raptors GM Masai Ujiri, and for navigating
local politics to get a new $30-million practice facility
built for the Raptors. John Cassaday, chief executive of
Corus Entertainment in Toronto, is widely considered a
front-runner for the job. But even he has his detractors
on the board. Cassaday is 60, according to Forbes.coom,
and some MLSE board members, a source told TSN, would
prefer a younger CEO.dddddddddddd. One person familiar
with the matter told TSN that the board has realized in
recent months the talent it is poised to lose when
Leiweke leaves. Several board members had discussions
with Leiweke about staying on as recently as December,
but that option has been abandoned, the person said.
Leiweke and MLSE part-owner Larry Tanenbaum have a
fractious relationship and unless Tanenbaum sells his
minority stake in Canadas highest profile company - a
development that probably wont happen - Leiweke is
unlikely to change his mind about leaving. Leiweke has
spent recent weeks addressing issues with TFC. Star
player Jermaine Defoe wont return to the team next season
and Leiweke has been trying to get MLSE the best return
for him, and plotting a plan to replace him. The story of
who will replace Leiweke has percolated in sports
business circles for months. Several Toronto-based sports
business executives said perhaps the best candidate to
replace Leiweke would be his own brother. Tod Leiweke,
Tims younger brother, is the chief executive of a sports
holding company that owns the Tampa Bay Lightning and its
arena. He previously was the CEO of the NFLs Seattle
Seahawks. Tods so well respected in the industry, but I
really dont see it happening, said one Toronto-based
sports industry executive. How does that conversation go
when Tod calls Tim and asks, what do you think of the
board? Should I interview for the job?
