How were the meals served, would one man from each compartment go to the galley and get food for everyone? Or was there another way?

I think that depended on the boat and the crew. In a lot of cases, I'm fairly certain that the crew rest areas would have been used as an impromptu mess/galley, and men on watch would have eaten at their stations, where applicable. I suspect the abovedecks-watch would have cycled belowdecks to eat, then possibly go back up or shift, assuming that meals were served at the break between watches cycling on/off.

Pretty sure a lot of it was at the Kaleun's discretion or whatever worked best for a particular crew.

What I'm asking is how was the food passed around?  I don't think every man would walk to the galley to fill a plate.  I was thinking maybe one guy from each compartment would get a tureen of food and bring it back to there respective compartment, or maybe someone's duty for the day was 'food distribution' throughout the boat.

I suspect it was some combination of the two - if the galleyman (chef) wasn't passing the food around himself, one of the galley-hands would have been carrying tureens forward and aft from the galley itself, then.

 Very good Question!

I beleive it was what ever worked best.  I beleive on U-805 each compartment send a man to the galley area to pick up the food in a container for this purpose.

Regards,
