What were some ways of beating boredom when out on a long patrol? Books? I read where Wolfgang Luth actually had an onboard newsletter and had different types of contests. Anyone have anything else?

Cards. There is no way that U-Boatmen weren't excellent card players. I've been told repeatedly to put a pack of cards into my survival kit, they're amazing for killing boredom.

Books, a decent selection of gramophone records, dunno what else.

 Hello!

They did have their watch duty to preform. They were commonly on 12 off 12.  Most of the time they slept when they were off.  My father once told me his entire war experience was " a few moments of terror surronded by a sea of boordom."

Regards,
