I have a four-figurine box of Soviet Naval Infantry (MORPEH) soldiers in their black combats, circa sometime in the Seventies guessing from their equipment and the all-black uniform. My plans for them are as follows:

- Get them painted decently.
- Find an appropriately scaled PT-76 amphib tank. Paint it decently.
- Build a diorama, fictional beach landing scene. Have the PT-76 coming up onto the shore with turret seemingly traversed, and a half-section of MORPEH advancing up the beach.
- Display on desk / bookcase.

Now, my only questions are what techniques would you fellows recommend for painting figurines and combat vehicles? I realize I can look elsewheres, but given that it's been literally years since I've last modelled and painted something I figure I'd go with the advice of the devils I know.

Mmm, has been years ago for me also, but when painting vehicles I always used air brushes. Gave me the best results. Camouflage would blend in very nicely. Figures I just painted with brushes. since brush strokes on "fabric" are not a problem, rather a benefit.

Any tips for detail work? Sets of decals seem to be the preferred method, but accurate decals may be hard to obtain for this particular project.

Depends on several factors. With a tripple 0 brush, and a steady hand, you can "draw" pencil thin lines. Depending on the size you require, you could use something we called "frisk film" which basically if a weakly sticky thin plastic film where you can cut out whatever figure you need. Stick that to the model and just spray paint over it with the air-brush. It will mask out your design. It's a kind of reversed decall. You stick the outlines on he model and paint the actual drawing "through" it.

Stencils might be easier, I'm better hand with a knife than a paintbrush. In addition, the insignias in question (Naval Infantryman's Anchor Patch) is... fidgety, let's say. And I have too much respect for the Morpexhii to halfass their badge.
