ARLINGTON, Texas -- The sight of the Texas Rangers
pitching staff does wonders for Kyle Seager. The Seattle
third baseman had three hits, including a two-run single
that sparked a four-run third inning as the Mariners beat
the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Tuesday night. A career .256
hitter in four seasons, Seager is hitting .329 against
the Rangers. "Ive always seen the ball pretty well here,"
Seager said. "Its a good park to hit in." Robinson Cano,
Dustin Ackley and recent call-up Nick Franklin added two
hits each as the Mariners, last in the American League in
hitting, had every member of the batting order reach base
during the first four innings, That backed the pitching
of right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (3-0), who allowed both
runs and six hits through eight innings. Iwakuma had a
streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings end with a
home run by Adrian Beltre leading off the second inning
that made it 1-0. Seattle has won two consecutive games
for the first time since early May. "Hes phenomenal,"
Seager said of Iwakuma. "Hes got great tempo and seduces
ground balls." Iwakuma began the year on the disabled
list with a torn tendon in his right middle finger and
made his first start on May 3. He threw a season-high 99
pitches on Tuesday night. "Im not obsessed with going
nine innings," Iwakuma said through a translator. "I want
to go out there and do my part, and I feel like I did my
part today." Rangers manager Ron Washingtons take on the
Seattle starter was: "Same Iwakuma. Sinking the ball.
Cutting the ball. Hitting his spots. Changing speeds.
Working fast. Having early contact." Mariners catcher
Mike Zunino told manager Lloyd McClendon that he thought
Iwakuma was finished after throwing 90 pitches in seven
innings. McClendon decided to see what more his starter
had, and Iwakuma retired Texas in order in the eighth on
nine pitches. "Were hoping to get him built up,"
McClendon said. "He ran out of gas again." The loss in
the opener of a two-game set means the Rangers have
either lost or split six consecutive series. Texas Colby
Lewis (3-3) started on seven days rest and allowed five
runs on nine hits through six innings, the longest of his
seven starts this season. Lewis debuted in the starting
rotation in mid-April after missing the previous 21
months following elbow and hip surgeries. Franklin was
called up from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Corey Hart, who
was placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining
his left hamstring on Sunday. Franklin was leading the
Pacific Coast League in hitting. A Texas lineup that has
yet to feature second baseman Jurickson Profar or catcher
Geovany Soto this season because of injury played Tuesday
without first baseman Prince Fielder and centerfielder
Leonys Martin. The Rangers hoped Fielder would return
after sitting out two games because of neck stiffness
that was recently attributed to a herniated disk. But
after an early batting practice session, Fielder said he
wasnt ready to play. Martin was removed from the original
lineup because of stiff neck. Cano has reached base in 27
consecutive games, a career high for the five-time All-
Star who signed with the Mariners as a free agent
following nine seasons with the New York Yankees. NOTES:
The Rangers replaced Robbie Ross in the starting rotation
with Scott Baker, who will pitch Friday at Detroit. Ross,
a first-year starter, was 1-4 with a 4.78 ERA. McClendon
said LHP James Paxton (latissimus dorsi) and RHP Taijuan
Walker (shoulder) both threw well during game-simulated
sessions on Tuesday afternoon. Texas optioned C J.P.
Arencibia to Triple-A Round Rock, purchased C Chris
Gimenez from Round Rock and moved LHP Martin Perez from
the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day list.

stroking the ball into the empty net. The French winger

we look back at LeBron James and the Miami Heat winning
their second straight NBA championship. Two men were
charged Thursday with conspiracy to defraud as part of an
investigation into a suspected Singapore-based
international betting syndicate which allegedly fixed
non-league football matches in England. The National
Crime Agency, which is leading the investigation, said a
seventh person had also been arrested following an
undercover operation by Britains Daily Telegraph
newspaper. He has been released on bail with the four
others. ChannSankaran, a 33-year-old Singapore national,
and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old with dual
British and Singapore nationality, will appear at a
magistrates court in Cannock, central England, on Friday,
the NCA said. They have been charged with conspiring to
defraud bookmakers "by influencing the course of football
matches and placing bets thereon" between Nov. 1-26. The
maximum prison sentence for the offence is 10 years. "The
Crown Prosecutions Organised Crime Division found
sufficient evidence and was satisfied it was in the
public interest toauthorize charges of conspiracy to
defraud," the NCA said in a statement. The Telegraph
reported that three of the original six people arrested
are footballers, with another reportedly a former Premier
League player who is now an agent. Games played in the
fifth tier or lower of English football are the focus of
the investigation, with the Premier League confirming
Thursday that it has not been contacted by police in
relation to the case. The Football League, which runs the
three professional divisions below the Premier League,
has already said it has not been involved in the
investigation. The fifth-tier Football Conference said it
is "aware" of the alleged match-fixing case. "The
Football Conference takes all matters relating to the
integrity of the game very seriously," it said in a
statement, "but it cannot make any comment on todays
story as it would be inappropriate to do so." The
Telegraphs website published a covertly recorded video in
which it says one of the fixers claimed matches could be
fixed for 50,000 pounds ($81,380). He also claimed to
have connections with Wilson Raj Perumal, the Singaporean
who was sentenced to two years in pprison in Finland in
2011 for bribing players in the Finnish football
league.dddddddddddd Match-fixing, fuelled by unregulated
betting markets in Asia, is widely viewed by footballs
authorities as one of the biggest scourges on the game.
Europol, the European Union police liaison agency, said
in February that it reviewed 680 suspicious recent cases
of match-fixing but the organizations chief of media and
PR, Soren Pedersen, said Thursday he was unable to
comment on whether this latest case was linked to that
investigation. "Unfortunately, this is not a problem that
has disappeared," Pedersen told The Associated Press in a
telephone interview. "Theres definitely enough for police
still to do to look into this crime phenomenon." The last
major match-rigging convictions in English football were
in the 1960s. Peter Swan, David Bronco Layne and Tony
Kay, who were all in or on the fringe of the England
team, were jailed for four months and banned for life for
corruption. In 1994, three then-Premier League players --
goalkeepers Bruce Grobbelaar and Hans Segers and striker
John Fashanu -- were alleged by a newspaper to have fixed
matches. The trio was acquitted following two trials
after juries were unable to reach a verdict. And in 1999,
four men linked to a Malaysian-based betting syndicate
were jailed for three years for plotting to sabotage
floodlights ahead of Charltons match against Liverpool
that year as part of a match-fixing plot. "Its no
surprise to see that it has hit the U.K.," Pedersen said
of the latest global wave of match-fixing cases. "Its not
only south-east Asia that has problems, but Greece,
Albania, Turkey and Italy of course. Its in central and
northern Europe. Even a country like Finland, which is
not normally linked to bribery or corruption, have had
several cases. Also in Hungary, there are things going
on. Its practically all over Europe." One of the biggest
recent alleged fixing plots was unearthed in Australia
where four English players were charged in September in a
criminal investigation. Before heading to Australia to
play for the Melbourne club Southern Stars, the men
played in Englands lower leagues.
