COLUMBUS, Ohio - Shea Weber shot faster missing the net
than any other player did hitting it. When he hit the
net, it was even better. The Nashville Predators captain
won the Hardest Shot competition at Saturday nights all-
star skills competition by clocking in at 108.5 mph.
Weber was just short of the record of 108.8 mph set by
the Boston Bruins Zdeno Chara at the last all-star
weekend in 2012 in Ottawa. You never really know how hard
it is until it registers, Weber said. Its different, too.
In a game you dont really see that. Guys dont skate right
into a puck and take a slap shot. Guys are one-timers or
standing still and taking it in different situations. In
game situations, players would have to get in the way of
that kind of shot.Everybody cringed, said all-star
captain Nick Foligno of the host Columbus Blue Jackets,
whose team beat Jonathan Toewss 25-19 to win the skills
competition. Wouldnt ever want to have to block
that.Webers 101.8 mph blast that missed the net and didnt
count was better than anyone elses best attempt.
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin shot 101.4 twice,
while Dustin Byfuglien of the Winnipeg Jets topped out at
97.3.Without Chara in the competition, Weber was the
favourite going in. But he considers Chara the king.Hes
the guy to beat all the time, hes got the big shot, Weber
said. Honestly I was nervous because theres some guys out
there that can rip it.Webers previous best was around 106
mph. Hes not sure if hell ever beat Charas record but
thinks its possible.I just want to keep getting better
every year, Weber said. I think as kids we strive to get
better at everything we do. Its no different now. You
dont want to get worse. You want to continually get
better.Fastest skater: After being traded for him at
Fridays all-star draft, Phil Kessel beat Tyler Seguin in
their head-to-head heat. With the Toronto Maple Leafs on
a six-game losing streak, it was Kessels first win in a
while.Youre cold ... Youre trying not to fall and
embarrass yourself, right? Kessel said.Rookie Jonathan
Drouin of the Tampa Bay Lightning had the fastest time at
13.103 seconds. Sportvisions player tracking technology
was used as part of the competition, as it will in
Sundays game.Breakaway challenge: Ryan Johansen stole the
show by bringing out 7-year-old Cole Vogt, son of
Columbus Blue Jackets trainer Mike Vogt, to help him
score and by getting teammates to do the Flying V from
the Mighty Ducks movies. Jakub Voracek of the
Philadelphia Flyers followed that by bringing out 21-
year-old Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames to help
him.I think that little kid was bigger than him. Lets be
honest, Voracek said of Gaudreau. That was the plan. It
was funny.Gaudreau, who wanted to light his stick on fire
for the event because he plays for the Flames, was added
to the all-star game as an injury replacement. Tyler
Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning missed the skills
competition with a lower-body injury, and will likely be
out for Sundays game.Johansen won the breakaway challenge
as a result of an online fan vote.Accuracy shooting:
Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane needed just five shots to
hit all four targets. Hes no Ray Bourque, but Kane won
the competition by doing so in 13.529 seconds.Skills
challenge relay: Steven Stamkos showed off his absurd
ability to hit the net on one-timers from a sharp angle,
and goaltenders Jaroslav Halak, Carey Price, Marc-Andre
Fleury and Roberto Luongo got to try their hand at
shooting and scoring on an empty net in a segment made
for the likes of Martin Brodeur, Chris Osgood and Ron
Hextall.Shootout: Kessel kept his good weekend going by
scoring on Corey Crawford, and former Blue Jackets
captain Rick Nash heard the boos from local fans. Nash
asked for a trade out of Columbus and is tied for the NHL
lead in goals for the Rangers.Thats how its been for the
last three years, so I expected it, Nash said. In one ear
and out the other. Its an all-star game. Theres nothing I
can do about it.---Follow @SWhyno on Twitter

Jersey . Louis, MO (SportsNetwork. The NHL Players
Association is advising player agents that signing their
clients to contracts in Russias KHL may run afoul of
recently imposed economic sanctions on Russia, violations
that can lead to possible financial or criminal
punishments. The U.S., Canada and European Union levied a
series of economic sanctions on Russia after Russias
annexation of Ukraines Crimea region in March. The
sanctions, which in some cases have been broadened over
the past months, have targeted many of Russias richest
businessmen who are close to President Vladimir Putin,
including some KHL team owners. For instance, Gennady
Timchenko, one of Russias richest men and a close Putin
confidant, is president of SKA St. Petersburg, one of the
KHLs most successful teams. Arkady Rotenberg, another
influential billionaire, is president of Moscow Dynamo,
Alex Ovechkins former team. Both Timchenko and Rotenberg
are believed to be part owners of their teams. In the
case of U.S. sanctions, all U.S. citizens and permanent
residents are barred from engaging in any transactions
with Timchenko, Rotenberg and any organization in which
they have a 50 per cent or more ownership interest. Even
if they are not actually 50 per cent or more owned by
sanctioned persons, the KHL (and some of its teams) could
be considered to be controlled by the blocked persons,
said a recent online briefing published by Washington law
firm Stewart and Stewart. Meanwhile, Gazprom, the massive
oil and gas company, owns Avangard Omsk, a team in
Siberia, while Rosneft, another oil company, owns the
CSKA club in Moscow, also known as Red Army. Gazprom,
Rosneft, Rotenberg and Timchenko all are on the U.S.
sanction list, as are many large Russian banks. Two weeks
ago, the NHLPA wrote to agents warning them about the
sanctions and the possible consequences of signing
players to contracts in Russia. In the Sept. 17 memo,
agents were told that the effect of sanctions on athletes
is difficullt to determine, that the situation regarding
Canadian, European and U.ddddddddddddS. sanctions is
fast-changing, and that its unclear whether the sanctions
target any Russian hockey teams. Dozens of North American
and Western European players have signed contracts with
KHL teams this season, putting them in possible violation
of the sanctions. NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon
declined to comment. U.S. Treasury department spokeswoman
Hagar Chemali declined to comment. Francois Lasalle, a
spokesman for Canadas department of foreign affairs,
trade and development, referred questions over whether
agents might have violated Canadian sanctions to the
NHLPA. Former Philadelphia Flyers forward Ben Eager, a
Canadian citizen who has been represented by Boston-based
Orr Hockey, recently signed a deal with CSKA in Moscow.
Eagers agent Rick Curran said Eagers contract was
negotiated by one of the players friends. NHLPA email
aside, Ive always been skeptical of Russian league deals
and have purposely avoided them, Curran wrote in an
email. I tried to review Bens deal for him but cautioned
him accordingly. Douglas Rediker, a visiting fellow at
the Peterson Institute for International Economics and an
expert on U.S. trade sanctions, said player agents should
be concerned about their possible legal exposure after
signing contracts with KHL teams. The risks of an
individual or a big corporation in breaching sanctions
are pretty severe, so the risk to someone who thinks they
are too small to matter are pretty dramatic if they get
it wrong, Rediker told TSN. Theres no typical scenario
here, as sanctions are not tools that have been used with
great regularity and in a uniform manner. They are
crafted to suit the individual situation. So far in 2014,
the U.S. Treasury Department has reached 20 settlements
with companies accused of breaching its sanctions.
Settlement payments have ranged from $21,375 to $963
million.
