Hello Shipmates

I've finally started the model, although the instructions are not too clear regarding colours.  If anyone out there can offer some suggestions, I would be grateful.

1.  Upper hull & conning tower.  I thought it was grey, but the instructions suggest a 90% white and 10% blue grey mixture.  Is this correct?  What would be the colour below the waterline?  Was there red antifowling?

2.  Crew's uniforms.  The model in the glass case ad showed blue jackets and black trousers.

3. The MAN diesels.  I know they would be black with oil and grease, but what was their colour?

4.  Interior.  I would guess this is where the colour described in #1 above.  Maybe I misread the instructions which were describing the interiou and not the exterior.

Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

Hello Graeme,

Up until autumn 1940, the upper hull and tower of U 47 was the medium blue-grey Dunkelgrau 51 (RAL7000). It was, at this time, changed to a darker colour which may have been Schlickgrau 58.

The lower hull would have been the standard dark grey anti-fouling Schiffsbodenfarbe III Grau (RAL7016) throughout the boat’s career, and NOT red.  There was no bootline either. This can be seen in the 1940 Kriegsmarine U-boat painting regulations at –

This webpage is also the best reference for the interior colours you are after. Alternatively, search for interior photos of U 995 on the web.

You can find suitable paints and FS codes for these Kriegsmarine paints at the “naval paints” page of my first website at –

For the wooden deck, see the “wooden deck” section of my second website at –

Good luck,

Dougie

Hello Shipmates

I finished the model at last.  What would be the best way to post photos of it?

You have to upload them to a public photography site and post links to them with the help of the buttons above the text edit windows.

Sites you could use are

www.photobucket.com
www.shutterfly.com

They allow direct linking (ie putting a link to pictures in a forum like this)

Hello Shipmates

I posted a bunch of pics of the Revell model at Photobucket.  You are all welcome to take a peek.  I'm no photographer, but they should give an idea of what the finished result looks like.  Comments welcome.
