Conning Tower number
Like all Kriegsmarine U-boats in the period before the commencement of World War II, U-47 had the boat's number (without the U) painted in large white numerals approximately 1.5 metres tall on both sides of the conning tower. This was removed on the afternoon of 19 August 1939, just prior to departure on the first war patrol.
