14.10.1940 U-47 departs dock at Lorient.

19.10.1940 Convoy HX-79 en route from Halifax/New York to Liverpool, sighted by U-47, soon joined by U-28, U-46, U-48 and U-100. Steam freighter Bilderdijk (Netherlands, 6,856 grt), part of HX-72, attacked by torpedo, sunk. Time of first attack, 2227 hours. Location 56°35N/17°15W.

19.10.1940 Motor tanker Shirak (United Kingdom, 6,023 grt), part of convoy HX-79, attacked by torpedo, damaged. Time of first attack, 2331 hours. Location 57°00N/16°53W. The Shirak fell behind the rest of the convoy and was finally sunk while stationary by U-48 commanded by Günther Bleichrodt on the following day (20.10).

19.10.1940 Motor freighter Wandby (United Kingdom, 4,947 grt), part of convoy HX-79, attacked with torpedo, damaged beyond repair. Time of first attack, 2346 hours. Location 56°45N/17°07W. The Wandby finally sank two days later, on 21.10.

20.10.1940 Steam freighter La Estancia (United Kingdom, 5,185 grt), part of convoy HX-79, attacked by torpedo, sunk. Time of first attack, 0037 hours. Location 57°00N/17°00W.

20.10.1940 Steam freighter Whitford Point (United Kingdom, 5,026 grt), part of convoy HX-79, attacked by torpedo, sunk. Time of first attack, 0148 hours. Location 56°38N/16°00W.

20.10.1940 Motor tanker Athelmonarch (United Kingdom, 8,995 grt), part of convoy HX-79, attacked by torpedo, damaged. Time of first attack, 0204 hours. Location 56°45N/15°58W.

23.10.1940 U-47 returns to dock at Lorient.
